My Half Marathons…

As many of you know from my Instagram, Dominik and I just got back from Washington D.C. for a mini vacation. I wanted to run another half marathon in a different city and neither of us had been to Washington D.C. so I registered for that one! It was a part of the Rock n Roll Marathon Series, which is really cool! About every mile to mile and a half there is a live band playing music. I didn’t listen to them because I had my music in, but it was still really neat! Since this was my second half marathon and I’m running my third in May, I thought I would answer some questions about my training and my gear! And if any of you are able to drive to Waco, you should run the Silos District Half Marathon with me, hosted by Chip and Joanna Gaines!

Why am I running so many half marathons?

I have always been a runner for as long as I remember. I have competed in track since I was about 13 years old all the way up through high school and even ran cross country my senior year of high school. Running has always been an outlet to me. When I am stressed, frustrated, confused, emotional – anything – I will go for a run to clear my head. I did, however, go through a phase in college and after I graduated college, to where I did not enjoy running as much. I just needed some time off. Earlier in 2017, I was going through some personal things and decided to pick back up on running and fell back in love. You can read about how I got back into it here and the program I used. That just lead into wanting to challenge myself and do something I have never done before – half marathons. Once again, I am going through a lot of big life changes (which I will share soon) and I’ve turned to my healthy hobby as my outlet. Why not put all my training into something good?

What shoes do I like to run in?

It was about a year ago when I started getting back into running. I wasn’t sure how far I would take it at that point so I didn’t invest in too much in my shoes or gear. I initially bought these pink shoes and fell in love with running in them. So then I bought them in black. I also pair them with these socks to run in. The right socks are just as important!

Music – How and what do I listen to?

Let’s start with how – I use my Apple Watch and these earbuds (super inexpensive but great)! However, even though I run with my Apple Watch, I still keep my phone on me and this is the armband I normally use.

So you will think I am crazy, but the only thing I have been running to is Taylor Swift’s new Reputation album. You would think I would be sick of it by now but I’m not haha! I like to run to things I can sing to rather than a specific tempo/beat but that album does have a good tempo for me!

What program do I use for training?

I started using the Nike+ Run Club app. It’s for free and you can download it on your phone and Apple Watch. I love using Nike+ because the plan adjusts to your runs. For example, if you skip a few days of running, the app will ask if you would like to adjust the remaining workouts to better prepare you. Also, the first few weeks, you will run a variety of tempo, pace and speed runs to help the app customize your plan. It’s very simple to use and I love it!

If I were to give you any advice, just relax and have fun with it! Don’t try to go over the top with training and definitely don’t put yourself through this for anyone but yourself! And also, you do not have to run the whole time. That was my goal during my first race and I ended up disappointing myself. Just run what you can and enjoy the process 🙂
